How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on BacksplashPicks starts with one question: will this microwave fit your space and your venting?

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the fit

An over-the-range microwave mounts under a cabinet, above the cooktop. Its width, height and depth, and the gap around it, decide whether it fits.

We check each unit's size and whether it vents out through a duct or back into the room. When it matters for your kitchen, we say so.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at capacity, power, sensor cooking, fan speeds, cooktop lights and any convection or air fry mode. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists.

When a detail comes from the maker, we say so.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after installing and using a microwave. We look for patterns, like a loud fan, a fit that differs from the old unit or a door that sticks.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A microwave that's great for a standard 30-inch space may score lower in a guide for a tight cabinet.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every microwave we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's installation sheet. Follow it for mounting and venting, and ask a qualified electrician or installer if you're unsure.

We don't give wiring, drilling or repair steps.
